This course will provide a basic introduction to soft robotics—an emerging field focused on developing machines/robots that are comprised entirely of soft materials. Soft robots can be inexpensive, impact resistant, and light weight when compared to traditional robots constructed from hard materials. These characteristics make soft robots ideal for certain applications, for example the exploration of hazardous or potentially unstable environments. By the end of this course, participants will be familiar with the basic principles used in the design of soft, pneumatic robots and the techniques of rapid fabrication (e.g., 3D printing and soft lithography) used in their prototyping and testing. This knowledge will be put into action as students are guided through the design and fabrication of their own, unique soft robot!
